چکیده

The amount of plastic strain caused by the motion of a single dislocation across an individual nanosize grain is drastically higher than the amount ecorded for larger grain sizes. As a result, in nanocrystalline materials, only a small number of dislocations would need to move within each ndividual grain in order to accommodate the plastic strain on the entire sample. This observation leads to a quantitative criterion for determining f observed dislocation activity is sufficient to accommodate realistic applied plastic strains. This new criterion is directly applicable to the nterpretation of in situ TEM experiments and computational molecular dynamics simulations. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Revisiting the intra-granular dislocation extension model for flow stress in nanocrystalline metals

In our previous work (R.J. Asaro, P. Krysl and B. Kad, Philos. Mag. Lett. 83 (2003) p.733; P. Gu, B. Kad and M. Dao, Scr. Mater. 62 (2010) p.361), the intra-granular partial dislocation extension model was shown to be consistent with the experimental data of flow stress in nanocrystalline FCC materials. However, since the averaged extension was taken for a nonuniform loop, the model predicted s...

Strong strain hardening in nanocrystalline nickel.

Low strain hardening has hitherto been considered an intrinsic behavior for most nanocrystalline (NC) metals, due to their perceived inability to accumulate dislocations. In this Letter, we show strong strain hardening in NC nickel with a grain size of approximately 20 nm under large plastic strains. Contrary to common belief, we have observed significant dislocation accumulation in the grain i...

Finite Element Modeling of Strain Rate and Grain Size Dependency in Nanocrystalline Materials

Nanocrystalline materials show a higher strain-rate sensitivity in contrast to the conventional coarse-grained materials and a different grain size dependency. To explain these phenomenon, a finite element model is constructed that considers both grain interior and grain boundary deformation of nanocrystalline materials. The model consist of several crystalline cores with different orientations...

What is behind the inverse Hall–Petch effect in nanocrystalline materials?

An inverse Hall–Petch effect has been observed for nanocrystalline materials by a large number of researchers. This effect implies that nanocrystalline materials get softer as grain size is reduced below a critical value. Postulated explanations for this behavior include dislocation-based models, diffusion-based models, grain-boundary-shearing models and two-phase-based models. In this paper, w...

Enhanced solid solution effects on the strength of nanocrystalline alloys

Solid solution strengthening in nanocrystalline alloys is studied using sputtered Ni–W as a model system. In the composition range of 0–20 at.% W, the sputtered alloys have a nanocrystalline structure with a grain size that is independent of composition. Nanoindentation of these alloys shows that solute addition increases strength to very high levels, almost in proportion to the solute content....
